Locations for a sportsman’s cave

It all begins with the environment.

You need to make some plans before you start imagining all the cool stuff you’ll put in your man cave and how you’ll spend great nights socialising in it or just relaxing by yourself. The first step is to choose a venue.

The first step in creating a killer sports man cave is to decide where it will be constructed. It should preferably be in a location that provides privacy while still being readily available.

The following are some ideas for converting a man cave:

The basement is where it all happens.
The garage, to be precise.
A shed is a form of outbuilding.
A spare space or the attic in your house.

Let’s take a closer look at these choices.
In the basement

If you’ve decided to make your sports man cave in the basement, make sure it’s livable. Look for leaking pipes, water damage, and damp.

Minor damages, such as cracks, are normally inexpensive to repair, but be mindful that it can cost up to £500.

However, if drains, gutters, and pipes must be constructed, the cost will reach £10,000.

Begin by cleaning the basement with soapy water and making sure there are no bugs crawling about, as abandoned basements are often home to small creatures. To get rid of pests, you may need to contact a fumigation company.

Ascertain that the basement has adequate access to utilities, especially electricity. Although it will almost certainly have at least one lamp, a man cave conversion does not have enough light fixtures and electrical outlets.

If you don’t have enough electrical sockets in your basement, you should be able to get some built for a few hundred dollars. If you need to instal light fixtures as well, the price would obviously go up.

Remember that basements are dark spaces, and you’ll need to take action to brighten them up. To help reflect the sun, begin with bright white paint and colourful decor.

You’ll almost certainly need to install extra lighting, and it’s a smart idea to use daylight bulbs like these for the main lights. While that article segment is about a female “she shed” basement conversion, the lighting information is equally applicable to a basement man cave conversion.

You would also need to add some kind of climate control, even if it’s just fans for cooling in the summer and electric heaters in the winter.

If you properly prepare a basement and ensure that it is well lit and airy, it can be an ideal place for a sports man cave because it provides plenty of room and privacy.

a parking garage

Since most garages are connected to the house and already have service connections and are weatherproofed, they are an excellent place for a man cave.

Many garages, on the other hand, suffer from the same lighting issues as a basement does. As a result, the same guidelines apply: soft reflective furniture and clear light-reflecting paint are the way to go.

Apart from the furniture, converting a garage into a man cave is typically a simple process. If your garage was previously used for car or other repair work, you will need to clean it with harsh chemicals to remove grease and oil stains.

A garage, like a basement, would almost certainly need some kind of climate control.

a shed

Another common place for a sportsman cave is a barn.

You can make a man cave out of an existing shed or create one from scratch. This article describes how to transform an existing shed and is well worth reading if you intend to take this path.

This article would be useful if you want to create a new man cave shed from the ground up since it details the steps from beginning to end.

Preparing a shed for a man cave conversion primarily entails weatherproofing it and ensuring that it is safe to spend extended periods of time in.

It’s important to make sure the roof is waterproof, and to use weatherproof paint on the outside and damp-proof paint on the inside. I’ve outlined the best method for doing this here, as well as the paints to use and how to waterproof the roof yourself.

A shed, like a garage or a cellar, would need to be temperature controlled.
Attic or spare room

When it comes to making a man cave, converting a spare room has both advantages and disadvantages.

Since it lacks the same degree of privacy and separation from the main house as the other alternatives, a spare room in your home is the least common choice for a man cave.

Due to the fact that most spare rooms are also the smallest rooms in the building, converting this space restricts your choices.

Of course, as I explained in my article How to Make a Man Cave in a Small Room, you can turn a small room into a man cave, but having more space is always preferable, particularly for a sports man cave where you would undoubtedly want to display a lot of sports-related decor.

Since not everybody has the space or the financial means to build or convert a shed, barn, or basement, a spare room is a perfect substitute.

On the plus side, a spare space in your house would almost certainly have electricity and be close to other facilities. As a result, it stands to reason that in such a room, a man cave conversion would be the most straightforward.

A spare room would also be fully weatherproofed, well-lit, and almost certainly already connected to your home’s HVAC system.

And you already have an attic conversion in your house, you will need to plan the attic in the same way you would a garage or outbuilding for your sports man cave.

Converting a man cave

It’s time to get started on your man cave conversion after you’ve chosen the location and planned it.
Before you buy something, make sure you measure the room.

A sports man cave is made up of a variety of sports-related objects, but it must include a few essentials like chairs, sports memorabilia, at least one large television, and sports decor.

A gaming table is another object that is often found in such a man cave. If you’re going to have a gaming table in your man cave, I suggest getting one that can be converted into a variety of games, such as the ones mentioned here.

Before you start decorating your sportsman cave, you should first determine how much room you have (width and length of the room).

Make sure you measure the door as well so you know what will fit in the room. You’d be shocked by how many people buy furniture only to find out later that it won’t fit through the door or is too large for the bed.

A large sports man cave shines, but as I previously said, you can still build one in a smaller room, though the furniture you can put in it will be reduced.

Please keep in mind that

A sports man cave is founded on the same principles no matter what sport you enjoy.

Ice hockey, rugby, wrestling, basketball, football, and other sports are all possibilities.

All you have to do now is choose the right decor, add souvenirs or memorabilia, and choose furniture that matches the sports theme.

Sports-themed furniture and themes for man caves

Here are some examples of different types of sports-related layouts to consider.

The sporting goods store

As a sports enthusiast, you undoubtedly watch several games. As a result, you should seriously consider placing at least one large screen TV in a prominent location in your man cave. If you have the budget and the space, a centrepiece of four TVs, each facing a different area of the room, such as the one seen in the featured image at the top of this post, is a great option.

Currently, watching sports and drinking a beer go hand in hand. As a result, you may want to build your own man cave bar.

While you can store your bottles and cans in a fridge, getting beer on tap and optics to pour your hard liquor completes the look and feel of a sports man cave bar. And, contrary to popular belief, constructing your own bar is not as costly as it seems. In reality, as I demonstrated in a previous article, a man cave bar can be built on a shoestring budget.

You can also get sports-themed bar stools, such as these, to go along with your man cave’s sports theme and even your favourite team.

The following step is to decorate the room.

Put up posters of your favourite teams or stars on the wall, and buy some sports mementos.

The sports stadium

Of course, not every sportsman’s cave is devoted to sports viewing. To play sports, some guys build a sportsman cave.

Obviously, the sports you will participate in will be restricted. It’s unlikely that you’ll be able to play baseball in your cave, but believe it or not, you can play golf, as I illustrated here!

Aside from that, you can add other gaming equipment such as a pool table, foosball, table tennis, or darts board, to name a few.

Sports memorabilia typical of a man cave

There are several items that can be used to build a sports theme in your man cave.

I’ve mentioned the most common types of man cave sports products below, but if you’re stuck for ideas, check out the article 100 man cave gift ideas, which contains a plethora of sports-related items that you might enjoy.

There are several different ways to design a sportsman’s cave. Of course, the most important goal is to fill the room with things that represent the sport you’re most passionate about.

While a sports man cave that represents multiple sports is feasible, it will be difficult to pull off unless you have a significant amount of room to work with.

It’s far easier to focus on one sport at a time. The theme of your sports man cave will be based on this sport.

Here are some suggestions for sports-themed man cave designs.

Costs associated with constructing a sportsman’s den

Let’s get down to the nuts and bolts of making a sports man cave now that you’ve decided you deserve your own dedicated area for sports.

The costs will be identical regardless of which sports theme you pick.

I discussed the costs of building a man cave in this previous post, as well as how to construct a man cave on a budget, but for the sake of readability, I’ll go through them again here.
The price of the shed

Expect to spend between £17 and £24 per square foot to get a shed constructed in the backyard if you’re going to create your sports man cave from the ground up. You can also take a look at this post, which explains how to do it.

Obviously, the larger the shed, the higher the price. Other costs, however, would rise as a result of the operation. Additional costs for wiring, plumbing, and paint will also rise.

Protection from the elements

Obviously, if you are using a spare room in your house, these costs would not apply. However, it would be a factor in the majority of other conversions.

I’ve already discussed the costs and steps involved in weatherproofing an outbuilding, but here’s a short rundown of what you may expect to pay.

A gallon of good weatherproof paint costs about £30. As I mentioned earlier, you can save money by painting the inside of the man cave with different damp-proof paint.

Read this for a more detailed breakdown of the costs associated with weatherproofing an outbuilding.

Connections to utilities

If you use a spare room in your house, these expenses will not apply. If you want to build your sportsman cave in an outbuilding or garage that doesn’t have electricity, you’ll have to pay for utility connections.

As I stated in the article How to Create a Backyard Man Cave, an outbuilding can typically be connected to the electrical grid for £500 or less, and it is a fairly routine and straightforward job for an electrician.

If you want to have running water but don’t have any water pipes, expect to pay a plumber about £150 per hour.

Insulation is a term used to describe the process

It is relatively inexpensive to insulate the space.

Simple insulating kits are everything you’ll need, or you can hire a specialist to do the job if you have the funds.

Batt insulation and loose fill insulation are the most common types of insulation in the United States.

Soundproofing the man cave is also a good idea. Both of these measures are outlined in the insulation and soundproofing costs section.

Controlling the weather

Any man cave needs to be able to regulate the temperature.

An HVAC system can be installed for about £6,000 (£4,000–£8,000 for the HVAC system, £2000-£3000 for installation).

However, you can do this for a lot less money if you use basic electric or propane heaters and fans.
Parts of furniture

Sofas, beds, a television, and a table are the most common pieces of furniture you’ll need.

Obviously, the cost of furniture is determined by the pieces themselves and where they are purchased.

This article contains more detail about man cave furniture as well as a guide to selecting it.

Memorabilia and decor

Your largest outlay will most likely be on decor and memorabilia.

Here are a few easy examples of what you should expect to pay, ranging from the poor to the outrageous.

£9 for a licence plate sticker (team/player).
£12 for a wall decal; £11 for plastic decor
£27 for your favourite team’s blanket
£30 for a wall sign with the team’s logo.
Neon is a neon colour. £32 for an LED team sign
£35 for a lamp made out of a football helmet.
£50 for a large favourite team flag.
£100-£150 for a round table with your favourite team’s logo.
£200-£300 for a hardwood coffee table with an NFL logo.
Sports chair with a theme: £200 – £300
£150 – £300 for a signed football
Fight Gloves of Muhammad Ali: £1.1 million

Some memorabilia can be very costly. A Lionel Messi football shirt, for example, was recently sold for £1.275 million.

For the most part, a replica Lionel Messi football shirt will suffice (as long as you are a football fan).

The key to finding the right decor for your sportsman cave is to follow two basic rules:

Keep your furniture as close to your theme as possible (though if you like it and its unconnected use it).
Put only stuff in your sportsman cave that you like, not because you feel obligated to.
